Abbotsford, BC…..Rocky Olfert, UFV Cascades Director of Athletics, is pleased to announce that Adam Friesen has been named permanent head coach of the men’s basketball program.

In June 2012, Friesen moved over from his position as assistant coach, which he held for five years, when then Athletic Director Chris Bertram named him interim head coach of the program. In addition to assisting Coach Barnaby Craddock, Friesen has coached at Yale Secondary in Abbotsford and worked with the very successful UFV Junior Cascade program, teaching the youth of Fraser Valley the basics of basketball. Adam guided to the Cascades to a 16-13 overall record in 2012-13 (14-10 regular season and 2-3 post season) to finish 4th in Canada West.  The Cascades were nationally ranked 14 of the 20 regular season weeks in the CIS top ten poll, peaking at 4th in Canada the first two weeks in January, 2013.

No stranger to the Fraser Valley, Friesen is a graduate of Trinity Western University, where he was an All-Canadian for the Spartans. The Bachelor of Arts graduate was TWU’s all-time leading scorer. Friesen played in 99 games for TWU from 2002-2005 scoring 1,869 points. Friesen also holds the Spartans record for most points in one season with 783 in 2002-03. The same year he establish the Spartans record for assists with 183, Friesen ranks number one in TWU history with 443 career assists.

Friesen becomes the third Cascades men’s basketball coach since UFV started playing in the CIS. Tom Antil coached UFV for one CIS season in 2006-07, while Barnaby Craddock coached the Cascades from 2007 through the 2011-12 season. UFV has been a member of Canada West and the CIS for seven full years.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity to coach the Cascades.  I’ve been incredibly fortunate to learn and work with the numerous coaches I have had over my career, I am looking forward to building upon the programs’ success from last year,” said Friesen.

“I am very pleased Adam has accepted our offer to take on the coaching role with the Cascades,” said Olfert. “Adam is a talented young coach and will bring a great deal of passion and enthusiasm to the position.”
