Victoria, BC….The University of Victoria Vikes defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 2-0, in the semi-final of the Keg Classic, at Centennial Field, in Victoria, BC. The Cascades will face their arch rivals Trinity Western Spartans in the third place game on Sunday afternoon, 12pm PST. TWU fell 4-0, to UBC Thunderbirds in the first semi-final.
The Vikes came out strong this afternoon and controlled the match from the opening whistle out shooting UFV 8 to 3 in the first half. Victoria would score four minutes in off a corner kick by Gavin Barrett. The Vikes would double their lead 15 minutes later on a goal by Cam Hundal. The Cascades spent the majority of the half defending as Victoria recorded six first half corner kicks.
The second half opened up with both teams having scoring opportunities, both goalkeepers Elliott Mitrou (Victoria) and Mark Village (UFV) holding their own keeping both teams scoreless. Victoria continued to keep the pressure on UFV and force the play in the Cascades defensive zone. Village, third year veteran from Abbotsford, made several saves midway through the second half to keep UFV in the match. Victoria recorded five more corner kicks in the second half as UFV played defense all afternoon.
The Cascades were outshot 12 to 7 as Mitrou recorded the shutout.
“The Vikes came out strong and were very impressive. We played better in the second half. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s match with TWU,” said UFV head coach Alan Errington.
