Ottawa, Ontario…The CIS has announced its seeding for the 2013 “Final 8” women’s basketball national championship, to be held, at the University of Regina, this coming weekend March 15-17. The Cascades (21-6) making their first appearance in the CIS “Final 8” tournament have been seeded seventh and will face the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Champion Saint Mary’s Huskies (20-2) in the quarterfinal round. The Cascades-Huskies game is scheduled as the night cap at 8:30pm. The Cascades and Huskies are in the same pool as the host University of Regina Cougars (Canada West Champions) and McGill University Martlets (RSEQ Champions).
“We definitely have a monumental challenge in our first round opponent. SMU defends, rebounds, and scores with the best teams in the country and they have the leading scorer in Canada in Justine Colley, who is just a great, veteran player. We will need to bring our best effort to defeat the #2 seed. I know our team is excited about the challenges of this week and we are looking forward to get things going against a very good team,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.
The Cascades have participated in the past two CIS East Regional tournaments falling to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (OUA), 78-69, in Fredericton, NB and last year in Ottawa to the host University of Ottawa Gee Gees (OUA), 75-69. The Score television network will broadcast Sunday’s gold-medal final at 4 pm central time live. All 11 games from the tournament will also be webcast live on www.CIS-SIC.tv.
