Regina, SK…..The McGill University Martlets (RSEQ Champions) defeated the UFV Cascades (Canada West Bronze Medalists) 70-52, in the CIS “Final 8” consolation semi-final. The Martlets move on to play the University of Ottawa Gee Gees in the Consolation Final. UFV’s season is over.
The Cascades came out strong this afternoon playing their trademark “defense” holding the McGill Martlets to 10 first quarter points, while forcing 8 Martlet turnovers in the quarter. The Canada West bronze medalists were led by Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC with 5 points and 2 rebounds. The Cascades continued to hold McGill in check as the second quarter started, midway through the quarter, McGill went on a six point run to tie the game at 18 each. The Martlets would grab their first lead with four minutes remaining on a three point play by Anneth Him-Lazarenko, Laval, Quebec. The Martlets would continue to hold the lead the remainder of the half with key shots and forcing UFV to make 9 turnovers.
The Cascades were led by Kayli Sartori, Chilliwack, BC with 11 points, Luyken added 8 points and Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC pulled down 4 rebounds at the break. UFV shot 29 percent from the floor in the half. Similar to last night’s game with Saint Mary’s only four Cascades are on the score sheet at the half. The Martlets top scorer at the break was Mariam Sylla, Conakry, Guinea with 7 points. Eight different Martlets scored at least two points in the first half, they shot 36 percent from the floor.
The Martlets opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run to open up a double digit lead, which they held onto for close to five minutes. McGill continued to hold the Cascades off the score board, as UFV scored only 11 points. The Martlets then went onto build up a 19 point lead as the third quarter ended. UFV shot 28 percent in the third quarter and were held to only three long range baskets for a 16 percent average from long distance. The Martlets also forced UFV to commit 9 turnovers in the quarter. Another key the Martlets bench has outscored UFV’s 21-8, after three frames.
The fourth quarter was even as both coaches played their entire benches, McGill’s double digit lead was never in jeopardy as they led by close to 20 points for the entire final quarter. UFV shot 27 percent for the half and the game well below their regular season average. They were 4 for 27 (14 percent) from long range another part of their game that propelled them to their 21 win season.
Sartori led UFV with 15 points, Luyken added 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals to be named Cascades “Player of the Game.” Jaslyen Singh, Abbotsford, BC came off the bench to score 8 points in 16 minutes played. Bartel’s five boards led all Cascades. The Martlets were led by Lazarenko and Francoise Charest, Quebec City, Quebec with 12 points each. Sylla would score 11 points, record 13 rebounds and block 5 Cascade shots to be named the Martlets “Player of the Game.”
