Women fall 3-1, Men 3-0
Abbotsford, BC…..In the much anticipated showdown between the CCAA’s top two ranked women’s volleyball teams both VIU and UFV did not disappoint as the match was one of best ever played at the Envision Athletic Centre. The VIU Mariners, defending PACWEST and CCAA champions, came into Abbotsford one game behind UFV in the conference standings and defeated their hosts 3-1 tonight to regain first place overnight, the two teams play again tomorrow afternoon, at 1pm, at EAC.
Both teams are 17-2, VIU holds the tie breaker with a 2-1 series lead, tomorrow’s result could determine which school finishes first in the PACWEST regular season. The set scores tonight were 25-21, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-20.
The match was evenly played throughout all four sets with excellent volleys by both teams. The Cascades and Mariners showed unbelievable athleticism saving balls that looked destined for the bleachers and keeping rallies going.
Led by both All-Canadians Kayla Bruce, Surrey, BC (UFV) and Dani Smith, Beaverlodge, Alberta (VIU) each set went down to the wire and midway through the fourth set the partisan crowd though that UFV would make a total comeback and force a fifth and final set, but VIU held them off to win by five.
The stage is set for tomorrow’s match for first place overall in the PACWEST conference and the CCAA’s number one ranking.
The VIU men’s volleyball team handed UFV it’s 17th PACWEST conference loss of the season, defeating the Cascades 3-0, at the Envision Athletic Centre. UFV is 2-17 and trail the CBC Bearcats 4-15 by two games for the final playoff spot with five games remaining. The set scores tonight were 25-12, 25-23 and 25-20. VIU’s record improves to 13-6. They will meet tomorrow at 3pm, at the EAC.
