The University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 79-70, in overtime, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Cascades Canada West regular season women’s basketball record falls to 8-11 good for 8th Place in the standings.
The Wesmen came out strong and established an early lead which grew to nine points as the first quarter ended. The Cascades played a very strong second quarter and went into the locker room trailing by six points. The third quarter might have been the best UFV has played all year defensively they held the high scoring Wesmen to 6 points, while scoring 20 and taking a eight point lead into the final quarter. Winnipeg would come back to tie the game and force overtime. The more experienced Wesmen team would hold UFV to three points in the overtime quarter and earned their 15 regular season victory of the campaign.
“Really good effort from the team tonight. Winnipeg jumped all over us early and we found a way to relax, get ourselves back in the game, and really control a lot of the second half,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer. “The overtime was the first this team has experienced and it showed a bit, played pretty tentative and lost a lot of our flow. Still think its a game we can draw a lot of confidence from. Winnipeg is a great team and we showed again how close we are!”
The Cascades were led by Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC with 15 points. Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC added 13 points, Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC chipped in with 12 points and round out the Cascades in double figures was Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba with 11 points.
Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC and Gaukel each pulled down 8 rebounds to lead the Cascades as they recorded 43 total boards for the game.
