UFV Cascades men’s basketball team defeat UBC Okanagan Heat, 85-80, in Overtime, in Kelowna, BC

Kelowna, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat, 85-80, in overtime in Kelowna, BC tonight. The Cascades Canada West regular season record improves to 10-7 in the Pacific Division good for third place. The Heat record falls to 2-16.

The Cascades opened the game by establishing a quick lead and holding the Heat to 11 first quarter points. The second quarter belonged to the home team as UBC Okanagan held UFV to 10 points en route to stunning the CIS number 9 ranked Cascades with a 23 point quarter to go into the break leading by five points. UFV shot a respectable 43 percent in the half. Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario led all Cascades with 8 halftime points.

In the third quarter, the Cascades rebounded holding the Heat to 13 points and pulling head by one point going into the fourth quarter. The final quarter was very entertaining as the lead changed hands several times with both teams having opportunities to win the game late in the quarter. UFV shot 55 percent in the second half. The overtime belonged to UFV as they held the Heat to 8 points and would hold on for their 10th victory of the Canada West campaign. UFV shot an impressive 60 percent in the extra quarter.

“Give UBC Okanagan all the credit they were tough tonight and played 45 minutes of basketball,” said UFV head Coach Adam Friesen. “Credit our guys for playing hard and coming back in the second half . We need to play a complete game tomorrow night against the Heat.”

Parchment led all Cascades with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Nathan Kendall, Abbotsford, BC chipped in with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Five different Cascades were in double figures, in addition to Parchment and Kendall, Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC hit for 15 points, James York, Richland, Washington 11 and Andy Khaira, Abbotsford, BC a personal career high 10. Nine different Cascades scored at least two points in tonight’s overtime victory.

The Cascades and Heat tip off tomorrow night at 7pm in Kelowna.
