Abbotsford, BC…The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s basketball team defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 90-82, tonight at the Envision Athletic Centre in Canada West regular season action. The Huskies improve their Prairie Division record to 7-4, while UFV’s record in the Pacific Division drops to 7-4. UFV is currently ranked 4th in the CIS top ten poll.
The Huskies came out strong and quickly opened a double digit lead which they did not relinquish as they led by 11 points after the first quarter, holding UFV to a season low 14 points at home. The Huskies continued to control the tempo of the game in the second quarter as they built on their early lead to open up a 15 point halftime lead, 48-33. The Huskies shot an impressive 60 percent from the floor in the first half led by Patrick Burns, Saskatoon, SK with 13 points. Stephon Lamar, San Diego, CA added 11 first half points as six different Huskies scored in the half. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC led all Cascades with a team high 10 points, as UFV shot 36 percent in the half.
The Cascades came alive in the second half and started to match Saskatchewan basket for basket. The third quarter ended even leaving UFV down by the same 15 points as halftime. In the fourth quarter Saskatchewan kept up the fast pace as they continued to shoot well and while the Cascades knocked the deficit down to eight points at the end of the game, the Huskies had the game well in hand. Saskatchewan shot 45 percent for the second half and 52 percent for the game. UFV shot 45 percent in the second half but the first half is what hurt their chances tonight.
“Not the way I we wanted to start the second half of the Canada West regular season,“ said UFV head coach Adam Friesen. “We will have to play much better tomorrow night against Alberta.” The Bears come to Abbotsford losing tonight in Langley, to TWU, 90-85.
The Cascades were led by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario with 23 points. Jordan Blackman, Abbotsford, BC added 16 and Freeman finished up with 15 points. The Huskies were led by Burns with a game high 27 point performance. Lamar chipped in with 18 points as seven different Huskies scored at least five points in the win tonight in Abbotsford. Burns pulled down 11 boards for Saskatchewan as they out rebounded UFV 33 to 17 for the game.
