University of Calgary Dinos defeated UFV Cascades, 88-84, in men’s basketball in Calgary tonight.

Calgary, Alberta….The University of Calgary Dinos, 6-7 in the Prairie Division, defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 7-6 in the Pacific Division, 88-84, in Canada West action tonight, in Calgary, Alberta.  The Cascades currently ranked 7th in the CIS top ten poll suffered their third straight conference loss.  The Cascades road record now stands at 5-2.

The Cascades started off slowly tonight and fell behind early spotting the Dinos a seven point first quarter lead.  The second quarter was the Sam Freeman show.  The Coquitlam fifth year senior went on a tear for UFV leading them to a 14 point run to start the quarter en route to a 32 point quarter and a 46-39 lead the break.  The guard, majoring in Kinesiology, scored 17 points in the quarter to lead all scorers at the intermission with 24 points.   UFV shot 45 percent in the half.

The second half started with UFV continuing to keep the tempo high and Freeman continued to lead all scorers hitting key baskets to keep the Cascades in the lead.  UFV would hold onto the lead after a late surge by the Dinos, 62-60, going into the final quarter.  While the final quarter was entertaining and fast paced the Dinos went on two six point runs that propelled them into the lead midway through the quarter.  Calgary led by six points down the stretch, but baskets by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario and Freeman brought UFV within two points with 30 seconds remaining, but could not tie the game in the closing seconds, falling by four points.  UFV shot 31 percent in the second half and for a second straight game held their opponent in check for three quarters before falling in the final quarter.

Freeman had a career night scoring 41 points, hitting 12 of 27 shots from the floor to set a new single point scoring mark for UFV Cascades men’s basketball since they joined the CIS seven years ago.  Freeman breaks Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC’s 35 point performance at last year’s CIS “Final 8” national championship bronze medal game against St. Francis Xavier X-Men.  Freeman also recorded 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal in tonight’s game.  Parchment finished with 13 points, 4 steals and 8 rebounds,  Nate Kendall, Abbotsford, BC rounded out the Cascades in double figures with 12 points.  UFV pulled down 38 total rebounds for the game, 23 on the defensive boards.  The Cascades also scored 18 points off Calgary turnovers a team high for the 2012-13 campaign.

UFV travels down Highway Two to face the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns tomorrow night before returning home for a weekend series (January 25-26) with the UNBC Timberwolves next weekend.
