Abbotsford, BC…..The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team completed the sweep of the UNBC, defeating the Timberwolves, 88-70, tonight at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades improve their Canada West Pacific Division record to 9-7, good for third place in the division. The Timberwolves record falls to 5-11 in their first year in Canada West.

UFV continued their hot shooting from last night as they shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half including nine three-point trays led by Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC with three for 13 first half points. The Cascades played stellar defense in the first half holding UNBC to 36 points for the half and creating nine Timberwolves turnovers. UFV also pulled down 13 defensive rebounds giving UNBC no second opportunities to score on missed shots.

“I am very happy with our start tonight, we came out shooting and our shot selection was great,” said UFV head coach Adam Friesen.
In addition to Freeman’s 13 point performance, Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario and rookie Manny Dulay, Surrey, BC each scored 9 points. Freeman led UFV with four boards. Charles Barton, Vernon, BC, led the Timberwolves with 12 points and four rebounds at the break.

The second half started with UFV maintaining their double digit lead as UNBC continued to stay in the game with key baskets to keep the score within 10 points. The Cascades shooting cool down in the second half as they hit 35 percent of their shots from the floor. The Cascades kept their pose when UNBC went on two mini runs, as they outscored the Timberwolves by five points in the half. The key to the Timberwolves second half success was only committing two turnovers and protecting the ball from UFV’s guards who had a tremendous weekend on defense.

“I was very happy with our intensity tonight as we played a full 40 minutes,” said Friesen. “We now turn our attention to Kelowna and playing UBC-O next weekend.”

Freeman led all scorers with a 28 point performance; he also recorded 4 steals and 5 rebounds. Kendall finished the night with 17 points and 7 rebounds, Parchment chipped in with 13 points and 7 boards and Sean Ashkenazy, North Vancouver, BC had a Cascade career high 10 point night. UFV pulled down 35 rebounds for the night.
Barton was top scorer for UNBC with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Jose Araujo, Toronto, Ontario added 15 points as they were the only two Timberwolves in double figures.
