UFV Cascades Men’s Basketball team defeat UNBC Timberwolves, 86-65, at EAC

Abbotsford, BC…..The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the UNBC Timberwolves, 86-65, to improve their Canada West Pacific Division record to 8-7, good for third place in the division. UNBC’s record falls to 5-10.

The Cascades led this game from start to finish coming out strong and not only ending their four game losing streak, but the offense came alive scoring 33 first quarters points and 59 in the first half. While the Timberwolves played an admirable first half they had no answers on defense for the Cascades who shot 66 percent from the floor. UFV was led by the hot shooting of Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC who led all scorers at the break with 26 points. Freeman, who broke UFV’s single game scoring mark last weekend with 41 points against the Calgary Dinos, shot 75 percent from the floor in the half. Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario added 19 points as Freeman and Parchment scored 65 percent of UFV’s points at the intermission. The Cascades 26 point halftime lead is their biggest of the 2012-13 campaign.

Jose Araujo, Toronto, Ontario and Charles Barton, Vernon, BC led UNBC with 10 points each. UNBC shot a very impressive 48 percent in the first half.

The Timberwolves came out running in the second half going on a 10-2 run to open the quarter and hold UFV off the scoreboard in the first half of the third quarter. The Cascades did hit key shots by Nathan Kendall, Abbotsford, BC and Sean Ashkenazy, North Vancouver, BC late in the frame, to maintain their double digit lead at 17 points. The Cascades again played stellar defense after spotting the Timberwolves the quick start in the quarter.

The Cascades played well in the fourth quarter tonight, this has been the quarter Coach Adam Friesen is hoping his young team learns how to hold onto leads and close out games for victories. UFV did hold UNBC in check tonight, in the final quarter, as their Prince George rivals scored only 11 points. UFV’s shooting was cold in the second half as they hit for only 26 percent from the floor, but their great first half was able to carry them to a 21 point victory tonight.

Freeman led all scorers with 27 points, only one point in the second half, Parchment finished the night with 24 points and Kendall with 19. It was the bench that did most of the scoring in the second half as Coach Friesen played nine players that dressed tonight. Kendall and Parchment each pulled down 9 boards as UFV out rebounded UNBC 34 to 29 for the game.

Araujo led all Timberwolves with a team high 15 points. Sam Raphael, Prince George, BC added 14 points and team high 7 rebounds. Barton chipped in with 12 points as eight different UNBC players scored in tonight’s game.

“I am very happy with the guys play tonight. We came out determined and shot well, said UFV head coach Friesen. “We played very well on defense holding the very talented UNBC team 12 first quarter points.” “I look forward to tomorrow night’s game against them.” UNBC and UFV tip off tomorrow night at 7pm, at the EAC.
