UFV Cascades men’s basketball team going to “The Valley of the Sun” for the holiday break
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team are heading south for the 2012 holiday break. The Cascades are going to Phoenix, Arizona to for a six day conditioning camp with three exhibition non-conference games against National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) teams from the Phoenix area in the Cactus Jam Holiday tournament. UFV will be south of the border from December 26th to December 31st.

The Cascades will play all its tournament games at Phoenix College’s “Varsity Gymnasium” on the campus located in the city of Phoenix. The Cascades schedule for the tournament:
December 28th Cochise College Apaches 4pm
December 29th South Mountain CC Cougars 2pm
December 30th Phoenix College Bears 6pm
The Cascades opponents are Cochise College, South Mountain Community College and the host Phoenix College.
The Cochise College Apaches men’s basketball team won its third consecutive championship last year by claiming the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference title outright. It was the Runnin’ Apaches’ second ACCAC outright title in the last three years. The team also won 17 straight games en route to a 25-win season and another top 20 finish in the final NJCAA Division I National polls, claiming the No. 18 slot in the NJCAA final poll.

South Mountain CC Cougars is gearing up for next season to revisit Danville, IL for another crack at the national title. The defending Region 1 champs are reloading with high scoring wingman and shooter Grant Ellender and key returnees, point guard DaLan Stafford and big man John Renzi. 6’10 forward Andrew Davis will help the front line with size and his ability to score inside and out. Rayvonte Adams is a physical guard and a proven scorer in the ACCAC. Recruiting continues as South Mountain looks to roll up another big year in Region 1.

The Phoenix College Bears home of the four time region one district one champions. 2008 NJCAA Men’s Basketball Academic Team of the Year, 2007 & 2009 NJCAA Academic All American Team, 40+ players have transferred to four year colleges, 5 NJCAA All Americans, 17 NJCAA All Region 1, 18 ACCAC All Conference, 7 NJCAA Academic All Americans and 4 Time NJCAA District 1 Coach of the Year.

UFV is 7-3 and in second place one game behind the UBC Thunderbirds (8-2) in the Pacific Division of Canada West. UFV is currently ranked 6th in the CIS top ten poll.
