UFV Cascades Men’s Basketball team drop three in Arizona 

 

Phoenix, Arizona…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team dropped three exhibition preseason games south of the border.  The Cascades played three of the top NJCAA (National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association) teams in the annual Cactus Jam Tournament, hosted by Phoenix College Bears, at “Varsity Gymnasium.”

 

The Cascades were using the trip as a six day conditioning camp with three exhibition non-conference games as a bonus to prepare for the second half of the very competitive Canada West regular season which commences on Friday, January 11th with the Saskatchewan Huskies coming to the Envision Athletic Centre.  UFV closes the exhibition side of the schedule with a 5-7 record (0-5 against NCAA and NJCAA teams).  The Cascades are currently 7-3 in regular season action, good for second place in Canada West’s Pacific Division.  UFV is ranked 6th in the CIS top ten poll.

Blackman led UFV in scoring with 47 points over the weekend.

 

On Friday night, UFV fell to the Cochise College Apaches, 103-75, Cochise is the defending ACCAC (Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) champions. The Apaches led at the break, 55-38.  The Cascades were led  by Jordan Blackman, a second year guard from Abbotsford, BC with 19 points.  Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 13 points and Luke Morris, Mission, BC with 11 points.  Blackman led all Cascades with 6 total boards.  Cochise Tevin Caldwell, a second year guard from El Paso, Texas led all scorers with a game high 20 point performance.

 

Saturday the Cascades fell to the South Mountain Community College Cougars, 74-64, as Blackman led UFV in scoring for a second straight night with 19 points.  Veteran fifth year forward Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC added 12 points and recorded 11 rebounds and Freeman chipped in 10 points.  SMCC’s Johnell Thompson, a second year guard from Inglewood, CA led all scorers with a game high 25 points.

 

In the final game on Sunday, UFV fell to the host Phoenix College Bears, 70-53, as Aaron McGowan, Toronto, Ontario and Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario led UFV with 12 points each.  Blackman added 9 points to finish the three game weekend with a team high 47 points for 15.7 point per game average.  Sean Ashkenazy, North Vancouver, BC led all Cascades with 6 total rebounds.   The Bears led at the half, 31-25.  Chris Solomon led Phoenix with 21 points.

 

Media Note:  NCAA and NJCAA play two 20 minute halves, while the CIS plays by FIBA rules four 10 minute quarters.
