UFV Cascades men’s basketball team fall to the University of Victoria Vikes, 73-69
Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team were defeated by the University of Victoria Vikes, 73-69, in Canada West regular season action at the Envision Athletic Centre. The Cascades record falls to 2-1, while the Vikes improve 3-0 in conference play.
York recorded 6 assists, 7 points and 3 assists tonight.
The Cascades and Vikes played a defensive first half as both teams were in top form holding the other team’s offense in check. The Cascades jumped out to a small lead and held onto a two-point advantage after the first quarter. The Vikes kept up with the CIS number four ranked Cascades in the second quarter outscoring the Cascades by the exact same two points to go into the locker room at half tied at 37 each.
UFV shot 50 percent in the half and 55 percent from behind the arch, while the Vikes shot an even 50 percent from the floor. The Cascades were led by Kyle Grewal, the fifth year senior from Surrey, BC with a team high 17 points. Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario added 9 points as six different Cascades scored in the half. Brin Taylor, Edmonton, Alberta led the way for Victoria with 9 first half points seven different Vikes scored at least two points in the half.
The second half was as close as the first with the lead changing hands numerous times as the Vikes opened up a five point lead midway through the third quarter before UFV close the gap to two points. The final quarter was close but Victoria led by as many as seven points in the final frame before UFV was able to come within three points late in the quarter. The Vikes shot an impressive 53 percent in the second half and pulled down several key defensive rebounds late in the game to hold off the Cascades. The Vikes defense held the Cascades Kyle Grewal to six second half points.
UFV was led by Grewal’s 23 point performance and team leading 8 total rebounds. Parchment added 20 points and first year guard Manny Dulay, Surrey, BC had a career high 11 points tonight against Victoria. James York, Richland, Washington recorded six assists, three steals to go with his seven points.
The Vikes were led by Terrell Evans, Las Vegas, Nevada with 19 points. Michael Acheampong, Toronto, Ontario chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds. Reiner Theil, West Vancouver, BC led all Vikes with 8 total rebounds as they out rebounded UFV 37 to 30.
“Tonight was a tough loss for us, it was the first time we were trailing to a CIS opponent all year,” commented UFV Cascades head coach Adam Friesen. “We will learn from tonight’s game and be ready to face the challenge tomorrow night.”
The Cascades host the Vikes in game two tomorrow night at the Envision Athletic Centre, game time is 7pm.
