Cranbrook, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s volleyball team defeated the COTR Avalanche, 3-0, to sweep the weekend series. The Cascades now sport a perfect 8-0 record in the PACWEST after five regular season weeks. The set scores this afternoon were 25-16. 25-18. 25-15.
The Cascades, nationally ranked fifth in the CCAA top ten poll, led from start to finish as they controlled the match on both offense and defensive side of the ball. UFV received contributions from everyone and a very balanced effort. “There were a bunch of firsts tonight, first time we had contributions from three different liberos,” commented UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr.
UFV was missing third year middle Kierra Noot, Surrey, BC, this weekend, giving rookie Julianna Penner, Surrey, BC the opportunity to gain valuable playing time. Penner made the most of her opportunity and had a great weekend. “I would like to say that it was surprising but Julie has been training very well and I like to say she met our high expectations of her,” said Bokehfohr.
“With so many great individual performances this weekend it is hard to pick the player of the weekend. Kayla Bruce (Surrey, BC) stood out among the rest and showed everyone why she was the PACWEST player of the year last year.”
The Cascades star middle had a dominating weekend where she was near impossible to block, and most opposing teams do not hit it in her direction. This is the first time in school history since the program joined the PACWEST (formerly BCCAA) in 2004, that they have started the regular season with eight straight wins.
The Cascades travel to Nanaimo, BC next weekend to face the defending PACWEST and CCAA champion VIU Mariners, in a first place showdown.
