Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the University of Victoria Vikes, 62-52, to sweep the two game weekend series. The Cascades, nationally ranked second in the CIS top ten poll, are now 4-0 in the Pacific Division of Canada West, while Victoria drops to 2-2.
“Good weekend, to win two games against a quality team like Victoria. A lot of valuable lessons to take away from the challenges they presented,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.
The Cascades defense came out to play tonight as they opened the game by holding Victoria scoreless for the first six minutes of the contest. UFV established an early lead and built on that early lead with key baskets throughout the first quarter. Up by eight points as the second quarter started, UFV continued to pressure the Vikes who committed eight first half turnovers. The Cascades shot 47 percent from the floor in the half as they were led by Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC and Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC each with 8 points. Rookie Shayna Litman, added 6 points and recorded a team high 3 rebounds at the break.
The Vikes were led by Debbie Yeboah, Winnipeg, Manitoba with 7 points, Tessla Rennie, Red Lodge, Montana was tops with 5 total boards.
In the second half, the Vikes made a game of it with a strong third quarter, Victoria shut down the Cascades offense holding UFV to 13 third quarter points, while out scoring their hosts by 7 to trail by five points going into the final quarter. The Cascades experience took over in the fourth quarter as they outscored Victoria by five and held the Vikes to 9 points to earn their fourth straight Canada West conference win to start the 2012-13 campaign.
UFV was led by Sarah Wierks and Nicole Wierks both with a team high 14 point performance. Kayli Sartori, Chilliwack added 11 points as nine different Cascades scored at least two points in the victory. Sartori and Nicole Wierks led UFV with 5 total rebounds each. The Vikes top scorer was Rennie with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Jessica Renfrew, Victoria, BC chipped in with 12 points, they were the only Vikes in double figures. UFV shot 45 percent for the second half and for the game.
The Vikes out rebounded UFV by a 31 to 28 count for the game, as UFV had only two offensive boards for the entire game.
