Burnaby Lake, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s and women’s rowing teams had an excellent day competing at the 2012 Canadian University Rowing Championships, hosted by the UBC Thunderbirds at Burnaby Lake.

On day one of the CURC the rowers battled wet conditions as the wind and rain were persistent on Burnaby Lake. Todays’ time trials seeded university crews for the finals tomorrow. 18 universities in attendance at this years championship; and UFV crews qualified for 5 of the 6 womens events, and 5 of the 6 mens events.
Highlights were the Men’s 2- (pair) race with Mat Morrison and Scott Micona placing 7th, which puts them with the top time in the B Final, just 5 seconds short of making the A Final in the 2000m course.
Emmett Campbell and Antony Dayton placed 8th in the Lightweight Mens 2x (double), putting them in the B Final. “Antony and Emmett didn’t come off the course with their best race, so our hope is they can bring themselves up a placing for tomorrow’s final,” commented UFV head coach Liz Chisholm.
UFV’s lightweight woman’s 2x (double), Bethany Whitehead and Kaitlyn Block, have a good chance in the B Final, as they fought through some technical challenges to place 12th today. If they row a good race tomorrow, they can up their placing 1 or 2 spots.”
Tomorrow’s racing will determine the university’s mens and womens champions, with team scores garnered through their placings in the races. “We hope to move up from a 10th placing across the country this year; tomorrow will tell!”
