Abbotsford, BC…The UFV Cascades women’s basketball team, ranked second in the CIS top ten poll, defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons, at the Envision Athletic Centre, to remain undefeated in regular season Canada West action. The Cascades push their momentum forward at 7-0, the Bisons drop to 2-5.
The Cascades offense came out strong in the first half, showing a lot of confidence in their shots. UFV shot 46 percent in the quarter. Action-packed, the UFV offense distributed the ball well while their defense kept the Bison scorers at bay as Manitoba trailed by twelve points at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter UFV continued to dominate the game with third year forward Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC, leading the Cascades with 14 points and five rebounds. Rounding out UFV’s leading scorers, at the half, included third year veteran Celeste Dyck, Abbotsford, BC, with six points and one rebound and third year guard Tessa Hart, Maple Ridge, BC, with five points and one rebound.
The Cascades went into the third quarter determined to protect their lead with great defense. UFV continued to hold the Bisons from any scoring threats that would have enabled them to get back into the game. A 20 point cushion was built thanks to one of many defensive steals by Sarah Wierks who led UFV with three for the game. The large lead stayed into the early minutes of the fourth quarter when the Bisons made a strong push around the seven minute mark. UFV was outscored in this quarter 18-12 with the Bisons getting as close as a 13 point deficit. As U of M continued to pursue, the UFV defense maintained their resiliency.
The entire Cascade bench saw the court tonight, particularly in the final quarter, and showcased the leadership of Celeste Dyck. The Arts major, showed tremendous focus and determination, rallying the first year players to maintain UFV’s double digit lead. Dyck had 10 points and nine rebounds. Fourth-year veteran Samantha Kurath, Abbotsford, BC, demonstrated her strength under the boards with seven points and six rebounds. Leading the Cascades in scoring was Sarah Wierks with 18 points and four rebounds. Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC led UFV in rebounds with eight on the night. For the game, UFV out-rebounded U of M 46 to 19.
“It was a good opportunity to get all of the players extended minutes tonight,” remarked Head Coach Al Tuchscherer, “I thought Sam (Kurath) and Celeste (Dyck) did some very good things on the court. We are looking forward to tomorrow night’s game against Winnipeg, our last at home before the break.”
