UFV Cascades defeat the UBC Thunderbirds 76-48 to improve to 5-0

Vancouver, BC…The UFV Cascades women’s basketball team defeat the UBC Thunderbirds, 76-48, on the road to improve to 5-0 in regular season play.  The Cascades take over first place as UBC falls to 4-1 in conference play.

The first half was evenly played with the Cascades trailing the Thunderbirds by one point after the first quarter.  UFV would outscored the Thunderbirds by three points to go into the half up by two.  The combined efforts of Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC, with 11 points, and Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC, with eight points, led to 60 percent of the Cascades total offense.  The Cascades shot 40 percent from the field in the half.

UFV came alive in the third quarter to demonstrate their strength as the number two ranked women’s program in the CIS.  The Cascades offense would dominate to produce 26 points to Thunderbirds’ nine.  UFV continued to play strong defense holding UBC to 10 final quarter points as they built up a 28 point lead at the final buzzer.  UBC was held to a season low 19 second half points.

Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC, had a strong night to lead the Cascades in scoring at 16 points and six rebounds.  Aieisha Luyken had 15 points and four steals, Nicole Wierks chipped in with 14 points and Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC, rounded out the leading scorers with 13 points of her own. “I’m really proud of our effort in a gym we have not had a lot of success in. I thought the girls played better as the game went on,” states Head Coach Al Tuchscherer, “We sustained a shooting clinic from UBC in the first quarter, but the team came together and rallied around our defense in the last three quarters.”

The Cascades continue their road trip in Vancouver with game two tomorrow at UBC, tip-off at 5:00pm in the War Memorial gym.  Catch the action live on webcast through canadawest.tv.
