UFV Cascades defeat MRU Cougars, 71-49, to open the 2012 Canada West season

Calgary, Alberta…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the Mount Royal Cougars, 71-49, to open the 2012-13 Canada West regular season in Calgary, Alberta.

The Cascades will face MRU tomorrow afternoon at 3PM (PST) before coming back to Abbotsford to prepare for their home opener, next Friday, November 9th, against the University of Victoria Vikes.

The Cascades ranked 3rd in the CIS top ten poll, came out strong and faced a very determined Mount Royal Cougar team playing in their first ever Canada West regular season game.  The first quarter was close as the Cougars stayed with the more experienced Cascade team, UFV led by one point, 17-16 after the historic quarter.

In the second, UFV found its shooting touch as they hit 50 percent of their shots to pull ahead of MRU, by 14 points at the break.  “We shot the ball well in the first half but didn’t seem to open up our interior game at all,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.

The second half belonged to the Cascades as they outscored the Cougars by eight points to win their first game of the season by 22 points.  Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC led all scorers with 17 points and 10 total rebounds.  Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 12 points and Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC 10 points in the opening day victory.

The Cascades shot 44 percent for the game.

Janelle Gieske led the Cougars with 11 points.

“We got the win tonight against a gutsy MRU squad.  I thought they really did a good job taking us out of our rhythm.  We need to make some adjustments going into tomorrow,” commented Tuchscherer.
