U Victoria Vikes sweep UFV Cascades, at EAC, win Saturday 78-72

Abbotsford, BC…The University of Victoria Vikes sweep the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades at the Envision Athletic Centre, winning on Saturday, 78-72, to improve their Canada West regular season record to 4-0,  while the Cascades record falls to 2-2.

The Vikes picked up where they left off on Friday night playing great defense and shooting the ball well.  Victoria held UFV to 15 first quarter points while they built up a double digit lead by shooting 55 percent from the floor.  In the second quarter Victoria held UFV to 8 points and went into the locker room with a commanding 19 point lead.  Tensions did spill over as the referees called technical fouls on both teams midway through the second quarter. The Vikes were led by Chris McLaughlin, Oakville, Ontario with 11 points and 5 rebounds.  Terrell Evans, Las Vegas, Nevada added 10 points as eight different Vikes scored at least two points in the half.

UFV was led by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario with 12 points, two assists and four rebounds.  Parchment hit for 60 percent of the Cascades offense in the first half as only four UFV players scored in the half.  The Cascades shot only 37 percent in the half and were 1 for 10 from the arch.

In the third quarter, UFV came to life holding Victoria to 16 points and outscoring the Vikes by 11 to move within eight points at the end of the quarter.  Veteran fifth year forward Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC scored 12 of his 21 points in the third quarter to lead the Cascades back into the game.  The Cascades continued to chip away at the Vikes lead and with 30 seconds remaining came within four points before the Vikes Evans hit two clutch free throws to put the game out of reach.  UFV shot 60 percent in the second half including 65 percent from behind the arch.  The Cascades effort tonight fell short as Victoria was able to withstand the great second half shooting by UFV.  UFV played a very physical game tonight and as the game ended the bench was shorten by three players fouling out.

“We played great in the second half.  Our offense came alive and we hit key baskets to get back into the game,” commented UFV head coach Adam Friesen.  “I was pleased with Kevon’s performance tonight as he led the way with 23 points.”  Parchment played 37 minutes as he led UFV in scoring with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists.  Grewal finished with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.  Nathan Kendall, Abbotsford, BC added 12 points and 2 rebounds.

The Vikes were led by Mclaughlin with a team high 22 point performance.  Evans added 17 points as Coach Craig Beauchamp used his entire team to earn tonight’s win.  Nine different Vikes scored as least two points in the victory.  McLaughlin and Evans each pulled down 7 boards as Victoria out rebounded UFV 29 to 22.

UFV travels to Vancouver to face the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend.
