UFV Cascades defeat Mount Royal Cougars, 81-67, in Calgary

Calgary, Alberta…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars, 81-67, to sweep the weekend series played at Kenyon Court, in Calgary, Alberta. The Cascades come home to face Victoria next Friday night a perfect 2-0.

The Cougars came out an quickly established an early lead on the CIS number four ranked Cascades. Mount Royal shot close to 60 percent from the floor in the first quarter and held the high powered Cascade offence to 15 points, to win their first quarter since joining the CIS, 19-15.

Kyle led UFV with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Parchment finished with 18 points as the bench produced some key baskets in the middle two quarters and Jordan Blackman, Abbotsford, BC chipped in with 13 points.

Fifth year guard Sam Freeman, scored 12 points tonight to give him a team leading 40 points (20 ppg) for the weekend. Freeman has been averaging 20 plus points the past three weeks as UFV has averaged 80 points per game, in both non-conference and conference games. UFV shot 42 percent for the game.

“I am happy with the boys effort tonight, they competed well for 40 minutes,” commented Friesen. “I am glad for the experience of facing a tough close contest in a visiting environment. It will only make us better going forward.”
