 The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons, 83-59, to improve their Canada West conference record to 4-3, in the Pacific Division. The Cascades will continue their home stand tomorrow night, against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, at 7pm.

The Cascades played a strong game tonight at both ends of the court, the team’s defense came to play from the beginning holding the Bisons to 13 first quarter points as UFV put 17 points on the board to take an early lead. The Cascades continued to shut Manitoba down in the second quarter as they built up a nine point lead at the break. UFV shot 40 percent from the floor in the half, as Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario led all scorers at the intermission with 14 points. Nathan Kendall, Abbotsford, BC added 6 points and pulled down a team high 7 boards in the half. Xavier Smith, Winnipeg, Manitoba led all Bisons with six points at the break.

UFV came out strong in the second half, the Cascades continued to play great defense and held Manitoba in check for the majority of the half. UFV would out score the Bisons by two points in the third quarter and then break the game wide open in the final quarter with an 11 point difference to win their fourth game of the season by 24 points. The Cascades did it with an impressive 60 percent from the floor in the half. The Cascades also shot 60 percent from behind the arch in the half as Parchment put on an offensive clinic with 28 points.

“Kevon had a brilliant game tonight for us’” commented UFV head coach Adam Friesen. “His shooting tonight was flawless as he seemed to hit every shot he took.” Parchment shot 65 percent for the night. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC continued his hot hand as well, scoring 18 points and second year guard Nathan Kendall added 13 points and a team high 10 boards. The Cascades defense forced 19 Manitoba turnovers. James York, Kirkland, Washington led the way recording four steals.

The Bisons shot 39 percent for the game as Stephen Walton, Atlanta, Georgia led Manitoba with 11 points. Smith and Yigit Ozsayiner, Istanbul, Turkey each scored 10 points tonight. Caleb Noel, Montreal, Quebec pulled down a team high 9 rebounds.

“I am very proud of the guys they played 40 minutes of basketball tonight,” said Friesen. “While we still have a lot to work on, the team gave a great effort tonight.”
