University of Victoria Vikes defeat UFV Cascades, 1-0, in Canada West action, in Chilliwack

Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Victoria Vikes defeated the UFV Cascades, 1-0, in Canada West regular season action tonight in Chilliwack, BC.  The Vikes Canada West record improves to 8-1-1 for 25 points while the Cascades record stands at 6-3-1 for 19 points.  The Vikes remain one point behind The TWU Spartans for first overall and the Cascades hold onto fourth place pending the rest of the weekend action around the conference.

The 200 plus fans were treated to a defensive gem tonight as both teams showed why they are near the top of the Canada West standings both Kayla Klim, UFV’s rookie goalkeeper from Burnaby, BC and Stephanie Parker, Chemainus, BC were excellent in nets tonight making one great save after another.   The match started off with both teams playing a very defensive first ten minutes before UFV started to take control of the midfield and mount an offensive attack that saw the Cascades have four corner kicks in a span of three minutes, but the Vikes defense was up to the challenge clearing the ball from their net each time.  The Vikes started to put pressure on the Cascades defense with minutes remaining in the half and were rewarded the game’s lone goal at the 39th minute when Nathalie Scharf, Salmon Arm, BC set up Emma Greig, Tofino, BC to the left hand side of UFV’s net and Greig was able to beat Klim to the short side for the tally.  The Vikes led by the one goal at the break.

The second half action picked up where the first half ended with great end to end soccer both teams trying to break down the opponents defense but on this night both UFV and Victoria’s defense would hold strong and when there was an opportunity both Parker and Klim made the saves needed to keep their teams in the match.   The Cascades made a late push to tie the match but like the previous few matches that tying goal was not in cards tonight.

Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC was named the Cascades “player of the match” for a fifth time this season.  Neeson kept pushing in the second half for that tying goal but Victoria double teamed Carly when she got close to the Vikes net.  “I thought Kara Delwo, Abbotsford, BC had a great game in midfield.  Our back four defended well and were difficult to break down and Neeson was effective in our attack,” said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.  Jaclyn Sawicki, Coquitlam, BC was named the Vikes “player of the match.”

“I was very proud of the effort tonight.  The girls worked very hard,” commented Giesbrecht.  “We paid the price for letting up for two minutes late in the first half. A bit more composure in the attacking third might have led to the tying goal. We could have executed better on offense tonight.”
