University of Regina Cougars defeat UFV Cascades, 75-58, at U Regina Invitational Tournament

Regina, SK…The University of Regina Cougars defeated the UFV Cascades, 75-58, in the first of three games UFV is playing this weekend at the University of Regina.  The Cascades playing in their second exhibition preseason game against CIS competition are coming off a two week layoff since defeating UBC-O, 70-58, in Chilliwack, BC.  They faced the defending Canada West regular season champions who finished 2011-12 with a perfect 22-0 record.  The Cascades will take on the University of Alberta Pandas (Canada West) on Saturday and the Carleton University Ravens (OUA) on Sunday.

The Cougars jumped out to quick lead tonight and built a ten point lead by the end of the first quarter.  The Cascades settled down in the second quarter playing great defense as they held Regina to 13 points, and cut into the lead by two points.  Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades scorers at the break with 10 points.  Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 6 points and Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC 5 points as UFV shot 28 percent from the floor.

In the second half, UFV continued to play tough defense holding the Cougars to 35 second half points.  The Cascades offense had a tough time tonight only scoring 26 points in the second half.  UFV would wind up shooting 29 percent from the floor for the game, while Regina shot close to 50 percent.

Sarah Wierks led UFV with 13 points, while Bartel finished with 11 and Nicole Wierks at 10 points.  Sarah Wierks pulled down 7 rebounds as UFV recorded 33 total boards for the game.

“Not a great game for us tonight.  Regina came out and showed why they are a perennial threat to win a championship year in and year out.  A lot we can build on and really we must improve as we prepare for conference play in a few weeks,” commented Al Tuchscherer, head coach. “All aspects of our game need to be better; but it was a start, a tough start, but a lot to improve on right away.”
