UFV Cascades women’s soccer team falls to University of Regina Cougars, 2-1, in Regina, SK

Regina, Sk…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team’s six game unbeaten streak came to an end today as the Cascades fell to the University of Regina Cougars, 2-1, in Canada West action this afternoon, in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Cascades record now stands at 5-2-1 for 16 points, the team remains in fourth place as they battle for a home playoff match.  The top four teams earn a home playoff match in the Canada West quarterfinals.

The Cascades started off slowly this afternoon in Regina, and the Cougars were able to capitalize by scoring the game’s first goal five minutes in as Meagan Cormier beat Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC for her sixth of the regular season.  The Cougars continued to pressure UFV’s defense and 20 minutes later Cormier would steal the ball from a Cascade defender and notch her 7th of the Canada West season to give the Cougars a quick two goal lead.  The Cascades would regroup and start to control the match and right before the half had several good scoring chances but Regina’s Stephanie Possberg would keep UFV scoreless at the break.

“We had a slow start today,” commented Rob Giesbrecht.  “Once the team settled down we had our chances in the half to get back into the game.”

The Cascades did get back into the game six minutes into the second half as veteran forward Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC started to work her magic and give the Regina defense fits.  Neeson was taken down in the Cougars box and UFV was awarded a penalty shot which Donna Pinning, Chilliwack, BC finished by beating Possberg for her fourth goal of the season.  Neeson and Pinning are now tied for the Cascades lead with four goals each.  UFV continued to press for the equalizer but the Cougars found ways to keep the Cascades from tying the match.

The Cascades used both goalkeepers this afternoon, Biagioni played the first half making one save and Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC the second half shutting out Regina while recording one save.  The Cascades Kara Delwo, first year midfielder from Abbotsford, BC was the Cascades “player of the match.”

“I like the way our team responded from the slow start to play a very good second half.  We controlled the half and just missed tying the game.  Carly again played well and was a great leader on the field,” said Giesbrecht.

UFV travels to Saskatoon to face the Huskies tomorrow, they sit 4-3-0 after defeating Victoria, 2-1, today.
