UFV Cascades women’s soccer team defeat Saskatchewan Huskies, 2-0, in Saskatoon

Clinch Canada West playoff berth with road victory.

Saskatoon, SK…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team clinched a Canada West post season berth with a 2-0 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, in Saskatoon, SK.  The Cascades regular season record improves to 6-2-1 for 19 points and they currently hold down the fourth and final home playoff seed with two weeks remaining in regular season play.  UFV could finish anywhere from first to sixth as six teams are between 15 and 24 points going into the final two weeks.  With the win, UFV also guarantees itself a winning regular season record for the second time in three seasons.  The Cascades have three matches remaining before the Canada West post season commences.

The Cascades defense played a picture perfect game today holding the Huskies scoreless as five first year Cascades started the match led by goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC who earned her first career shutout and victory facing 15 Saskatchewan shots in the match.  The first half was scoreless but UFV played a very solid half challenging the Huskies defense and creating several great chances to score the first goal of the match.

The second half started with UFV pressuring the Huskie defense and three minutes in were rewarded when Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC perfect corner kick hit Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC who found a pinching in Donna Pinning, Chilliwack, BC to score her team leading fifth goal of the season.  “I am very happy with Donna’s hustle on our first goal, she sacrificed herself for the team and scored a beautiful goal on a mad scramble in front of Saskatchewan’s net,” commented UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.

The Cascades continued to put the pressure on Saskatchewan and second year forward Victoria Baird, Surrey, BC scored her first career CIS goal to clinch the very important road victory for UFV.

The Cascades Sam Temple, Calgary, Alberta was named the “player of the game” for anchoring the defense and holding the powerful Saskatchewan offense at bay.  “This was an important road victory for our team. I am very proud of how we bounced back from yesterday’s loss in Regina.  We played fantastic today a unified performance by all,” said Giesbrecht.
