Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades are pleased to host the 2nd annual Honda Way men’s basketball weekend. The Cascades welcome to the Envision Athletic Centre McMaster University Marauders (OUA West), UNBC Timberwolves (Canada West), Langara College (PACWEST) and the university they faced in the 2012 CIS “Final 8” quarterfinals, Lakehead University Thunderwolves (OUA West). The games run from Thursday night through Saturday and include an athletics department Tailgate BBQ party on Friday before the rematch of UFV and Lakehead.
The Cascades come into the weekend event a brand new team, with seven new faces and a new head coach. Adam Friesen takes over as head coach of UFV, the rookie bench boss is in his fifth year with the program and is no stranger to the Fraser Valley; Adam is a graduate of Trinity Western University and a five year letter winner on their men’s basketball program. Coach Friesen will look to veteran Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC who was UFV’s Athlete of the Year in 2012 and named to the CIS “All-Tournament” team at last year’s “Final 8” for leadership. “Kyle is a steady force on our team. He has been with the program for five years and has been a big part of the team’s development,” said Friesen. The coaching staff are also counting on, are Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC and James York, Richland, Washington both played key roles down the stretch last year and were key contributors in both the 63-62 victory over Victoria, in the Canada West semi-final and at the nationals in the 83-71 win over Lakehead.
The Thunderwolves come into the tournament as the defending OUA West champions, posting a 19-1 record last year. Their lone loss was to the CIS national champion Carleton Ravens, 88-85 in Thunder Bay. The Thunderwolves were eliminated from the CIS national championship tournament by UFV, 83-71, in Halifax, in the first official meeting between the two schools. The McMaster Marauders come into the 2012-13 season sporting a 17-4-1 record last year in OUA West play. UNBC Timberwolves are one of two brand new basketball schools in Canada West coming over from PACWEST this will be their first season of competition in Canada West and the CIS. The final team appearing this weekend in the Honda Way is Langara College Falcons, a PACWEST conference team from Vancouver, BC.
The Cascades look to build on their 98-82 victory over York University Lions (OUA-East) last weekend, in Kamloops, BC. The 2012-13 Canada West regular season starts next weekend in Calgary, Alberta against MRU Cougars.
