Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades opened the 2012-13 PACWEST campaign with a 3-2 loss to their cross town rivals the CBC Bearcats. The set scores were 25-19, 18-25, 26-24, 22-25 and 18-16. The second half of the opening weekend two match series will be played tomorrow night at CBC’s gym, at 8PM.
Tonight’s home opener did not disappoint the crowd at the Envision Athletic Centre as both teams came to play and the match lasted two hours before the visiting Bearcats won the fifth and deciding set by a score of 18-16. The Bearcats came out strong and won the first set by six points.
UFV settled down in the second set and tied the match at one set each before a long volley in the third set gave CBC back the lead. The Cascades seemed in control from that point on winning the fourth set and leading several times in the fifth set before CBC would score the final three points to earn head coach Phil Wiens his first career PACWEST victory.
“We had our opportunities to finish plays, finish sets, and finish the game…but we didn’t capitalize. The boys will draw their lessons from this one and come out for redemption tomorrow night,” commented UFV assistant coach Carl Nienhuis.
