Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s volleyball team earned their first win of the young PACWEST regular season by defeating the Camosun College Chargers, 3-2, at the Envision Athletic Centre. UFV now sports a 1-3 record, while Camosun’s drops 2-2. The set scores were 21–25, 25–23, 10-25, 25-17 and 15-13.
The match started with the Cascades dropping the first set 21-25. UFV would come back from an early deficit in the second set to even the game at set a piece. Camosun went to work in the third set as UFV struggled losing the frame 10-25. Cue the comeback as UFV had a huge serving streak in the 4th, including 3 consecutive aces, by Adam Chaplin to take the 4th set by a score of 25-17. In the fifth set, UFV was up 13-12, Michael Bailey came in and made a clutch serve with an ace, putting UFV up 14-12, after Camosun earned the next point, to move within one point of a tie at 14-13. Trevor Nickel earned the game winning kill after a long final rally.
Nickel led in offense with 12 points (6 kills, 5 blocks, 1 ace), Kurtis Stromdahl led the team in kills with 8 and Nicholas Vojnovic played well tonight with 10 digs.
“We were able to see valuable contributions from a lot of guys tonight as we tried different combinations. The boys responded well after struggling in the third, and we were able to find a mix of guys who got the job done. A good fight, well deserved victory,” said Carl Nienhuis, Cascades assistant coach.
