Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s golf team captured the 2012 PACWEST conference championship with a come from behind victory over Camosun College and the rest of their PACWEST golf opponents in today’s final round of the regular season campaign. Trailing Camosun College for most of the regular season UFV made up the seven strokes today to wind up in a dead tie with the Chargers at 2,354 team strokes each. The Cascades were awarded the tie breaker and their third PACWEST Championship title in six years. VIU Mariners finished third overall with a team score of 2,374.
UFV will now go onto represent the PACWEST at the 2012 CCAA national championship tournament in Oshawa, Ontario hosted by Durham College, October 15 to 19. The Cascades will have some very talented competition at the championships below are the 2012 conference champions:
RSEQ: Champlain St Lawrence Lions
ACAC: Lethbridge Kodiaks
ACAA: Holland Hurricanes (2011 CCAA national champion hosts)
OCAA: Humber Hawks (2011 National Champions)
UFV won the fourth regular season tournament with a two-day total of 586. The UBC-O Heat finished second with a score of 590 and Camosun and VIU Mariners were tied for third with a score of 591.
The Cascades were led by Aaron Pauls, Chilliwack, BC who shot an amazing 138 for the two-day tournament. Pauls a defending CCAA All-tournament all-star finished first overall on the weekend, he shot 69 both days and was atop the leader board all weekend. Pauls would finish second overall with a four tournament total of 583, five shots back from the 2012 overall individual champion Jarred Callbeck of Camosun College.
Mitch Lock, Mission, BC shot a 150 for the weekend and finished ninth overall with a regular season score of 590. Darren Whitehouse, Langley, BC would round out the Cascades top ten finishers on the season with a total of 588 for the year, ranking him sixth overall.
“I am not sure I have the words to describe what happened on the golf course today. It was truly the gutsiest performance by a team I have ever watched. To come back from that deficit against a team that good is just incredible. My hat is off to this group of athletes,” commented UFV Cascades Chris Bertram.
Bertram, in his eighth year as head coach of the Cascades has been named PACWEST Coach of the Year for the third time by his coaching peers. Today’s championship is the team’s fourth overall and they look to medal at the CCAA national championship for a fourth time in those eight years.
