UFV Cascades defeat Lakehead University Thunderwolves, 88-70, on day two of Honda Way Classic
Parchment scored 18 points tonight against Lakehead
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, 88-70, at the Envision Athletic Centre, on day two of the Honda Way men’s basketball classic. The Cascades, facing Lakehead for the first time since they defeated their OUA rivals, 83-71, at the CIS national championship tournament, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, improved their Honda Way record to a perfect 2-0 with one game remaining tomorrow night, against McMaster University, at 7PM.
The Cascades started quickly tonight building a double digit lead early and never looked back as they played tremendous defense holding the Thunderwolves to 11 first quarter points, while delighting the crowd by scoring 24 unanswered points. UFV continued to play great team defense in the second quarter as they maintained their 13 point lead at the break. Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC led all scorers at halftime with 15 points. The veteran Cascade put on a display hitting three long range baskets and playing almost the entire first half. Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 9 points and 2 rebounds in the half.
In the second half, the Cascades were dominate as they control both boards and shot an impressive 50 percent from floor. UFV held the powerful Lakehead offense to 12 points in the third quarter and built up a 25 point lead. Coach Adam Friesen was able to play all ten players tonight as UFV held Lakehead in check down the stretch to win comfortably by 18 points.
“I am really proud, the boys did a great job tonight executing the game plan against a very talented Lakehead team,” commented UFV head coach Adam Friesen. “The consistency in energy, communication and togetherness was great tonight and will be something we will have to continue to demonstrate and improve upon going forward.”
Grewal led the Cascades with 31 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists to be named the Cascades “player of the game.” Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario added 18 points and second year forward Jordan Blackman, Abbotsford, BC added 15 points in the win tonight. The Thunderwolves Anthony McIntosh was named Lakehead’s “player of the game” for his 10 points, 5 rebounds and one assist. Alex Robichaud led all Thunderwolves with 12 points.
