UFV Cascades defeat McMaster University Marauders, 81-48, to close out Honda Way Classic perfect 3-0

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the McMaster University Marauders, 81-48, to close out the 2012 Honda Way Classic a perfect 3-0. The Cascades came out strong tonight and played lights out defense, they were resilient all night long holding the Marauders to minimal shots creating 13 McMaster turnovers and scoring on numerous two on one breakaways. The Cascades shot 52 percent in the first half, while McMaster shot 28 percent. The Cascades defense held McMaster to nine first quarter points and 25 at the break. UFV led by 16 points at halftime with Sam Freeman, a fifth year guard from Coquitlam, BC scoring an amazing 22 first half points.

Freeman and the Cascades continued their hot shooting in the second half as they hit for 45 percent and held McMaster to 23 total points in the half. Sam led all scorers with 31 points tonight to be named the Cascades “player of the game.” “Sam was excellent tonight, his shots were accurate and his scoring touch was on,” commented Adam Friesen UFV’s head coach. Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario hit for 12 points including two dunks to spark the crowd at the EAC. Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC added 11 points and 8 total rebounds as ten different Cascades scored at least two points in the win over McMaster.

Joe Rocca and Brett Saunders led the Marauders with 9 points each. Saunders was named the Marauders “player of the game” for his 9 points, 2 rebounds and one assist.

“We played well this weekend. Now we can turn out attentions to our first two regular season games in Calgary, against Mount Royal, next weekend,” said Friesen.
