Prince George, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the UNBC Timberwolves, 7-0, to improve their Canada West regular season record to 2-1-0 for 6 points. The Timberwolves regular season record falls to 0-3-1 for 1 point.
The veteran Cascades team came out strong and dominated their brand new league rivals right from the opening whistle. Carly Neeson, a third year forward from Maple Ridge, BC continued her hot play from last week’s opening matches in Chilliwack and quickly opened the scoring eight minutes in when she finished a beautiful give and go play with veteran midfielder Danika Snook, Chilliwack, BC. Neeson would continue to dominate the first half as she would score her second goal of the match 14 minutes later off a pass from Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC.
UFV would score twice more in the first half on a penalty kick by Donna Pinning, Chilliwack, BC and Sunayna Samra, Langley, BC right before the whistle blew to end the half. Coach Rob Giesbrecht was able to play his entire bench this afternoon and give his reserves some valuable playing time. “UNBC was organized and played hard, we were able to score a couple key goals early enabling me to give our young players valuable time on the pitch.” said Giesbrecht.
In the second half UFV kept the pressure on UNBC and continued to set the tempo of the match. UFV would score three times in the second half on goals by Snook, Shelby Beck, Langley, BC and Tristan Corneil, Surrey, BC. Both Beck and Corneil had their first multiple point games at the CIS level showing the UFV coaching staff that they have numerous offensive weapons going forward into the heart of the schedule. “Shelby played well this afternoon, gaining some valuable playing time,” said Giesbrecht.
Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC started the match in the Cascades net, earning the shutout and victory. Rookie Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC played the second half in the Cascades net, her first CIS experience of her career.
“I am very proud of how the team handled today’s game, they were very professional and our team gained valuable playing time for the matches coming up,” commented Giesbrecht. “Carly again had a great game, her leadership on offense has been excellent.”
Today’s match was the first between UFV and UNBC at the CIS level. The Cascades seven goals were a team high under Coach Giesbrecht. The previous high for UFV was 4 goals against the UBC Thunderbirds, on October 9th, 2010, as the Cascades defeated UBC, 4-3, in Vancouver. Today’s seven goal differential was the team’s new record in their seven year affiliation within the CIS.
