UFV Cascades men’s soccer defeat U Calgary Dinos, 3-0, in Canada West action

Calgary, Alberta…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s soccer team defeated the University of Calgary Dinos, 3-0, in Canada West regular season action in Calgary. Alberta.  The Cascades improve their conference record to 1-2-1 for 4 points while the Dinos falls to 1-4-1 for 4 points.

The Cascades played a strong game on Sunday dominating the host Dinos from the opening whistle to the closing.   UFV controlled the midfield and quickly established they would test the Calgary defense as they peppered both Dino goalkeepers with a season high 21 shot performance.  The Cascades would open the scoring in the 38th minute of play as Connor MacMillan, Chilliwack, BC set up James Najman, Coquitlam, BC for his first CIS Career goal.  The Cascades led by the one goal at the half.

UFV continued to pressure Calgary in the second half by controlling the play.  Their hard work paid off in the 57th minute as Justin Sekhon, Abbotsford, BC scored his own inaugural CIS career goal to give the Cascades a two goal advantage.  After the second Cascades goal, Calgary started to move the ball but Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC made several key saves to earn his first shutout of the year.

The match was clinched when fourth year veteran midfielder Sasa Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC collected a pass from Cole Almond, Maple Ridge, BC off a Cascade corner kick to score his first goal of the season.  Third year defender Ravi Singh, Abbotsford, BC was named Cascades player of the game for his role in helping the UFV defense keep Calgary in check for the rest of the match.

“This was a great team effort today, it was a rewarding victory” commented UFV Cascades head coach Alan Errington. UFV will host Saskatchewan and Alberta next weekend, at Exhibition Field, in Chilliwack.
