UFV Cascades defeat University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 3-0, in Canada West action

Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 3-0, in their first Canada West match against the Manitoba school.  The Cascades, now unbeaten in five straight matches, improve to 5-1-1 for 16 points, the fastest start in the seven year afflialation with Canada West. The Wesmen’s record falls to 0-7-1.

It was Winnipeg who jumped out to the quick start challenging the Cascades goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC and the UFV defense.  The Wesmen had several great scoring chances early, but the fifth year Arts major stood her ground making a fantastic leaping save off a direct shot to keep the match scoreless.  The Cascades started to take control of the match thirty minutes in, Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC found Tristan Corneil, Surrey, BC in front of the Wesmen net and the rookie faked a shot on goal and found Kara Delwo, Abbotsford, BC all alone for the tap in to beat Winnipeg’s keeper Janelle Deniset, Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The Cascades would double their lead two minutes later when Victoria Baird, Surrey, BC set up Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC for her second goal in as many nights.

The second half started with UFV marching down the pitch and Neeson scoring her fourth of the year on an assist from Friesen.  The Wesmen did not give up and tested Biagioni several times more before Chantelle earned her fourth shutout of the season.  Biagioni’s goals against average is a remarkable .050 over the first half of the season.  “Chantalle played great tonight.  She stopped three quality shots by Winnipeg,” commented UFV head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.  “Her leadership has been excellent helping our young defense adapt to top level university soccer competition.”

Biagioni was named the Cascades player of the match.  The Cascades offense produced 17 shots on goal, this marks the third time this season they have registered double figures in shots.

UFV travels to Regina and Saskatoon next weekend to face both the Cougars and Huskies in their final regular season road trip of the campaign.
