UFV Cascades defeat MRU Cougars, 3-0, in Chilliwack, BC

Three second half goals clinched the opening day victory.

Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars, 3-0, in the Cascades inaugural home opener at Exhibition Field, in Chilliwack, BC.  The Cascades now sport a 1-0-0 record for three points in Canada West.  The Cougars were playing in their first Canada West/CIS women’s soccer match after coming over from the ACAC (CCAA) level .

The Cascades came out strong and controlled the tempo of the match right from the beginning as it was clear they were the more experienced team, despite starting three first year players.  The Cascades captain Chelsea Steffen, Abbotsford, BC set the tone with her dominance in the middle setting up the Cascades forwards with numerous chances early in the match.  UFV tested the young MRU defense right from the beginning forcing several mistakes by the Cougar back four leading to two corner kicks within the first ten minutes of the match.  The MRU goalkeeper Kelsey Markland, Calgary, Alberta was busy in the first half making several key saves on Cascade shots and keeping MRU tied with UFV.  While the match was scoreless at the break, UFV out shot MRU 8 to 3 and controlled the majority of play in the half.

In the second half, UFV continued to pressure MRU’s defense and their hard work paid off nine minutes into the second half when Steffen converted a tremendous corner kick from Danielle Schmidt, Abbotsford, BC to score the first Cascade goal in their Exhibition Field history.  UFV continued to pressure the Cougars and ten minutes after the Cascades first goal Tristan Corneil, Surrey, BC found Sam Temple, Calgary, Alberta alone in front of the MRU net and the Criminology major made no mistake beating Markland for UFV’s second tally.  The Cascades final goal came in the 71st minute when Donna Pinning, Chilliwack, BC scored on a penalty kick.  The fifth year Kinesiology major became the first Chilliwack resident to score on home soil for the Cascades.

Chantelle Biagioni, a fifth year goalkeeper from Pitt Meadows, BC earned the shutout and victory in UFV’s net recording two saves.

The Cascades host the University of Alberta Pandas on Saturday night, September 8th, at 5PM.  The Pandas tied the University of Victoria Vikes, 1-1, in both their Canada West openers tonight.
