UFV Cascades Women’s Soccer team ties Calgary Dinos, 2-2

Calgary, Alberta…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team tied the University of Calgary Dinos, 2-2, on Sunday to earn four of six possible points on their Southern Alberta road trip.  The Cascades record now stands at 3-1-1 for 10 points, while the Dinos sit at 0-3-3 for 3 points.

The Cascades started off slowly on Sunday, with the early part of the soccer match being mostly played in the middle of the pitch.  Midway through the half, UFV started to take control with third year veteran Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC leading the way.  Neeson has been the Cascades leader on the field all year and today was no exception.  With seven minutes remaining before the half, the Criminology major set up Danica Kump, Surrey, BC in front of the Dinos net and Kump made no mistake as she buried the ball past Calgary goalkeeper Kristen Barton. The Cascades would double their lead four minutes later as Kump converted a second Neeson pass to send UFV up two points into the intermission.

“We played very well in the first half, after a slow start we created several great scoring chances which Danica (Kump) converted for our two goal lead at the half,” commented Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.

UFV continued their attack of the Calgary defense in the second half.  The Dinos held UFV from scoring, and midway through the second half the Dinos were able to get on the board.  Calgary’s Maddie Lee found Amy Hockings, whose shot beat UFV’s rookie goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC.  The Dinos would tie the match with nine minutes remaining when Lee hit Lauren Vernon with a pass from the right corner of the box to beat Klim cleanly.

“I am very proud of our young team.  We earned four of the possible six points on the trip,” said UFV’s coach.  The Cascades will host the University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg, next weekend, at Exhibition Field, in Chilliwack, BC.
