UFV Cascades men’s soccer team win annual “Keg Classic” in Victoria, BC
Shutout both Victoria and TWU to earn Classic title
 
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s soccer team captured the annual University of Victoria Vikes “Keg Classic” by shutting out the defending national champion Vikes, 1-0, on Saturday and the Cascades arch rival Trinity Western University Spartans, 4-0, in the final, on Sunday.  The Cascades capped off a brilliant week which started with a 1-0 shutout over Simon Fraser University Clan, NCAA Division 2, on Wednesday.       
 
“A terrific performance by all of the squad this weekend and a well-deserved cup win,” said UFV head coach Alan Errington. “The team had a great week beating CIS champion Victoria, SFU and Trinity.”
 
On Saturday, UFV opened the “Keg Classic” by facing the host and defending champion Victoria.  The Cascades who earned a berth in last year’s gold medal match repeated the feat by defeating Victoria, on the island, 1-0, on a goal by Dustin Wallington, Port Coquitlam, BC off a perfect pass on a corner kick by Ryan Liddiard, Kamloops, BC, in the 73rd minute of play.  Jacob Kubanski, Chilliwack, BC earned the shutout victory in the Cascades net.  The second year Kinesiology major was named UFV’s “player of the game.”
 
“The boys were magnificent today, against a very good U Victoria team and defended like a good professional team. A very disciplined performance by all players,” said Errington.

On Sunday, facing their arch rival Trinity Western University Spartans, UFV defeated the Langley, BC school, by a score of 4-0, to capture the 2012 “Keg Classic” crown. With spring in the air UFV came out strong set the tempo for the championship match as Sasa Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC had the match’s first scoring attempt less than one minute into the match.  Plavsic, named UFV’s “player of the match” set up Trent Mayer, Abbotsford, BC with a perfect pass that beat TWU’s goalkeeper Evan Lowther at the 28th minute to open up the scoring.  UFV would add a second goal before the intermission by when TWU’s keeper dropped the ball into his own net.  The goal was recorded as an “own goal.”
 
The second half started with more pressure by UFV resulting in the Cascades third marked of the game, as Daniel Molendijk, Maple Ridge, BC finished a Mayer pass and Ethan Collins, Abbotsford, BC put the icing on the cake scoring in the 90th minute as UFV won the two-day tournament.  The Cascades first year defender Colton O’Neill, Abbotsford, BC had a brilliant weekend shutting down the top strikers from both Victoria and Trinity Western University.  Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC earned the shutout victory in UFV’s net.
