UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat Athletes of the Week

Spencer Evans, men’s basketball, Alexa McCarthy, women’s basketball and Kayla Bruce, women’s volleyball (co-recipients) are the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades/Abbotsford Heat Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 12, 2012.
Evans, a first year guard from Maple Ridge, BC helped the men’s basketball team defeated TWU Spartans, 89-70, to finish the Canada West regular season with a school record 13 wins as the team earned a home playoff series by finishing second in the Pacific Division, also school records. The Business major scored 7 points, pulled down 3 rebounds and blocked a shot in 11 minutes of playing time.

McCarthy, a third year guard from Chilliwack, BC helped the women’s basketball team defeat TWU Spartans, 74-65, to finish the Canada West regular season with a school record 12 wins as the team earned a home playoff series by finishing second in the Pacific Division, also school records. The Kinesiology major scored 12 points, recorded 2 rebounds and one steal in 22 minutes of playing time.

Bruce, a fourth year Surrey, BC native led the women’s volleyball team to a pair of 3-2 victories over the Camosun College Chargers over the weekend, to improve the Cascades PACWEST regular season record to 18-4. The Cascades have clinched second place and a bye into the PACWEST semi-finals the weekend of February 23. The veteran middle is the overall leader in total offense in the PACWEST with a 4.21 average. Bruce also leads the PACWEST in aces with 71 for a 0.85 average.
