UFV Cascades women’s basketball team raises $1,522.85 on “Shoot for the Cure” Night
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team raised $1,522.85 this past Friday night, at the Envision Athletic Centre, at the annual “Shoot for the Cure” night. The CIS Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) annually runs a fundraising initiative to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, and other related cancer charities, the campaign is in its fifth straight season.
The Cascades started the campaign by setting up a table in one of the UFV’s more populated areas during the week. The team sold pink mittens, lapel pins, ribbons, water bottles, pens and t-shirts with the logo designed by the WBCA. On game night both teams wore the CBCF t-shirt during warm ups and all the Cascades players wore pink shoe laces to recognized the fight against breast cancer.
“I am very proud of the team, they worked extremely hard to raise the money,” said UFV women’s basketball head coach Al Tuchscherer. The project was headed by Alexa McCarthy, a third year Kinesiology major from Chilliwack, BC who was the recipient of the 2010-11 UFV Cascades Athletics Community Service award. Alexa has been front and center on numerous volunteer projects for UFV athletics, she organized the varsity student-athletes to raise 21 boxes of non-perishable food items for the holiday season and was part of operation “red nose” to name a few volunteer organizations she has worked with over the past year.
The Cascades raised over $1,000.00 in 2010-11 and the total keeps growing each year as the fans of the Cascades continue to be generous in support of UFV and WBCA.
