UFV Cascades sign two recruits from Whitecaps Girls Elite Program

Rob Giesbrecht, head coach of the UFV Cascades women’s soccer team, is pleased to announce the signing of two top recruits from the Whitecaps Girls Elite program, Kayla Klim and Sam Ricker.

“We are thrilled to be adding two quality prospects in Kayla Klim and Samantha Ricker.  Both players have benefited from their time with Whitecaps Girls Elite program and both will be challenging to contribute immediately next fall.  Not only are Kayla and Sam both exceptional soccer players, they both possess the quality of character and desire for success that we look for.  They will both thrive at UFV,” said UFV Head coach Rob Giesbrecht.

Klim a resident of Burnaby, BC will join a very talented goalkeeping duo of Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC who has won 15 games and posted 8 shutouts over the last two seasons and second year keeper Danica Ferris, Chilliwack, BC.  Klim currently plays for Burnaby Mountain Secondary and the Vancouver Whitecaps Girls Elite team.

“Kayla is an outstanding goalkeeper, she is a fierce competitor and an amazing shot-stopper.  Kayla has played in big games and has done very well, I am confident she will have a very successful university soccer career,” said Giesbrecht.

Ricker, a native of Delta, BC will join one of Canada West’s top defensive teams, led by veterans Chelsea Steffen, Abbotsford, BC and Danielle Schmidt, Abbotsford, BC.  With the loss of captain Megan Webster, Abbotsford, BC to graduation, Ricker will fit nicely into Coach Rob Giesbrecht’s 2012 lineup.  Ricker currently plays for the Vancouver Girls Elite team and attends Delview Secondary.

“Sam is a solid defender who has a great balance of aggression and composure.  Sam can play in the back as well as a holding midfielder.  Sam’s athleticism, desire and ability on the ball will allow her to smoothly transition to the demands of university soccer and she will be a key part of the future success of Cascade Women’s Soccer”, said Giesbrecht.

Coach Giesbrecht has done a great job of attracting Vancouver Whitecaps Girls Elite program players to the Cascades, this past year Macki Shopland, Langley, BC made her debut with UFV and quickly earned a starting position.  “Macki came to our program from the Whitecaps Girls Elite program and she had a very strong first year, playing 90 minutes a game for us in the middle of the park,” said the third year Cascade coach.

The Cascades have participated in Canada West for six years and quickly established themselves as a contender winning Canada West championship in 2010 and the CIS bronze medal.  UFV has been ranked as high as 6th in Canada over the past two seasons.
