UFV Cascades Kayla Bruce PACWEST Female Volleyball Player of the Year
Four men’s and women’s volleyball players named PACWEST All-Stars
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades Kayla Bruce, Surrey, BC has been selected the 2011-12 PACWEST female volleyball Player of the Year. Bruce is joined by two other women’s players Brittany Stewart, Walnut Grove, BC, Jenna Evans, Abbotsford, BC and men’s player Aaron Flanagan, Langley, BC as PACWEST all-stars. The Cascades also have three student-athletes named to the PACWEST all rookie teams, Adam Chaplin, Mission, BC, Jon Dvorak, Langley, BC and Krista Hogenwoning, Delta, BC.
Bruce has been the leader of the UFV Cascades for the past two seasons, this is Kayla’s second straight year as a first team PACWEST all-star and the Surrey native won the individual total offensive statistics category for a second straight year with a total offensive average of 4.10. Kayla also led the PACWEST with 73 aces for an 0.78 average and was third in blocks with 87 for a 0.94 average. Kayla led UFV to a 20 win season, and second place in the PACWEST behind VIU. The Cascades are nationally ranked 4th in Canada (CCAA).
Kayla was the PACWEST female volleyball player of the month for December, 2011 and twice has been named the UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat athlete of the week. “This was a monster season for Kayla,” said UFV Head Coach Dennis Bokenfohr. “She may be our most consistent player as she records great statistics every night.”
Stewart, the captain of UFV has been selected for a second time to the PACWEST second all-star team. In addition to being a tremendous leader on and off the court, the Maple Grove native finished second in the PACWEST with 372 digs for a 4.18 average. Brittany was selected the UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat athlete of the week for the week of January 30th. For Evans this is her first selection to the PACWEST second all-star team, the Abbotsford native finished sixth in the conference with a total offense of 3.64. Jenna finished fourth in kills with 268 for a 3.05 average. Jenna received the UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat athlete of the eek award for February 20th.
Flanagan, led the men’s team to the PACWEST playoffs as he was selected for a second straight year to the PACWEST second all-star team. The Langley native led the Cascades in total offense with a 3.31 average good for 11th in the conference. Aaron also led UFV in kills with 267 for a 2.97 average, good for 8th in the PACWEST. “We are very proud of Aaron’s leadership and extremely happy the coaches of the PACWEST recognized his hard work for a second straight year,” said UFV head coach Greg Russell.
The Future looks great!
The future of both programs looks great as three members of the 2011-12 UFV Cascades volleyball programs were named to the PACWEST All-Rookie teams. Hogewoning came out strong at the start of her CCAA career and was named UUFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat athlete of the week, twice in the fall as she was one of the early heroes as UFV ran off eight straight conference wins to stat the year. The Delta native finished fifth in kills with 195 for a 2.95 average and 8th overall in total offense with a 3.56 average in the PACWEST.
The men’s team placed two players on the all-rookie team Dvorak, placed 14th in the PACWEST in digs with 131 for a 1.51 average and Chaplin finished 12th in aces with 17 for a 0.21 average. Both were named UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat athletes of the week during the winter semester.
