W Volleyball:  Cascades 3-1

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s volleyball team defeated Capilano University Blues, 3-1, in the PACWEST championship semi-final to advance to tomorrow’s gold medal match against the winner of the CBC-VIU match later tonight.  The Cascades, currently ranked 4th in the CCAA national top ten poll, have improved their PACWEST regular and post season record to 21-4.  UFV is on the brink of earning a berth in the CCAA national championship tournament, to be played March 8-10 in Nanaimo, hosted by VIU.  Should VIU win tonight’s second PACWEST semi-final, the Cascades clinch a berth in the national championship tournament.  The set scores today were 25-23, 25-23, 14-25 and 25-20.

Like all four regular season matches today’s playoff contest was close and each set even closer than he scores.  Twice the first and second sets UFV came back from as large a deficit as seven points to pull out the victories needed to clinch the match. As they have done all season they were resilient every time Capilano made a run, UFV kept its poise and answered back with key blocks and they were able to win key volleys to keep Capilano from tying the sets.

“We played very well today,” said UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr. “The team kept its composure when Capilano threaten to tie the match in the second set, that as to key to our win today.”

Krista Hogewoning, Delta, BC and Jenna Evans, Abbotsford, BC stepped up today and played extremely well.  Captain Brittany Stewart, Walnut Grove, BC and PACWEST Player of the Year, Kayla Bruce, Surrey, BC led the way as UFV was able to in the match in four sets.  Stewart recorded 12 digs and Evans led the Cascades with 19 kills.  Evans was named the Cascades “player of the match.”

While the Cascades will play for gold tomorrow, Capilano will face the loser of CBC-VIU for the PACWEST bronze medal.
