Roads to CALGARY AND HALIFAX start TONIGHT at Envision Athletic Centre

 Men’s and Women’s Basketball

 The roads to Calgary for the women’s basketball team and Halifax for the men’s basketball team start tonight at the Envision Athletic Centre.

The Cascades men’s basketball team are ranked 4th in Canada the highest ranking in the school’s six year affiliation with the CIS.  UFV finished the regular season 13-5, good for second place in the Pacific Division and have been nationally ranked the entire Canada West regular season.  The Cascades are preparing to host their first ever playoff series at Envision Athletic Centre, February 23-25 against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.   In their only meeting in the 2011-12 regular season; Lethbridge defeated UFV, 87-78, at the Envision Athletic Centre.  The loss was the only one UFV would suffer on their home court all year.

Led by veterans Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC, Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC and Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC the Cascades present a well balanced offense and head coach Barnaby Craddock can go ten men deep and all year they have contributed to the school’s record 13 regular season wins, including an 8-1 record on home court.

The women’s basketball team 9th in the CIS top ten poll, a school record seven weeks in the top ten and this marks the second time this year they have hit 9th in Canada.  The Cascades finished second in the Pacific Division with a 12-6 record and will host the University of Calgary Dinos the weekend of February 23-25 in the first round of the Canada West playoffs.  The Cascades defeated Calgary, 88-71, in their only Canada West regular season meeting, at the Envision Athletic Centre.

The Cascades are led by fifth year veteran guard Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The women’s program is also well balanced receiving scoring from ten different players.  The Cascades to watch during this playoff run in addition to Klassen, are Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC, Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC and Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC.  Coach Al Tuchscherer has worked hard at producing one of the best defenses in Canada West, six times this year on home court, UFV has held their opponents to under 10 points in a quarter and twice to under 20 points in a half.
