Playoffs are in the air at Envision Athletic Centre

Playoffs are in the air at The Envision Athletic Centre as both the UFV Cascades men’s and women’s basketball programs look towards the 2012 Canada West post season with great expectations for a home playoff date for the first time in their six years as a members of Canada West and the CIS.

The men’s team, now ranked 8th in the CIS top ten poll, are currently 10-5, coming off their 88-72 victory over arch rival TWU Spartans, look to host the UBC Thunderbirds, ranked 3rd in the CIS and sporting a 12-2 first place record in the West Division of Canada West.  The Cascades trail by three games going into the weekend series, while they only trail the University of Victoria, 11-3, by one and a half games for second place, and a home playoff series.

“UBC is always a difficult and tough test, they are top of the league again, and it will be exciting to have a high calibre basketball team like them in our gym this weekend,” said UFV head coach Barnaby Craddock.

The women’s team come into the weekend series against UBC, with a 10-5 record, good for second place, two and half games behind the Thunderbirds for first place in the West Division.  UFV fell out of the CIS top ten poll after their 71-59 loss to TWU, this past weekend.  However their chances to host a post season series at the EAC are still very much alive.  The Cascades have three regular season games remaining, two with UBC and one with TWU at Langley.

The weekend promotions at UFV will include the “CIS Shoot for the Cure” night on Friday, February 3rd against UBC.  Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will be wearing “Shot for the Cure” t-shirts in warm-ups and the women’s team will be selling CBFC merchandise all night with proceeds going to the local CBFC chapter.

In addition, UFV Athletics welcomes UFV International to the Envision Athletic Centre on Friday night to help cheer on the Cascades in these two very important conference games.   On Saturday night, UFV says goodbye to three seniors, as Senior Night will honor Tessa Klassen, women’s basketball team, and Sheldon Bjorgaard and Mike James, men’s basketball.
