UFV Cascades to host Canada West Quarterfinal Playoff Series, weekend of February 23 to 25

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s and women’s varsity basketball programs are hosting one of the Canada West basketball quarterfinals at the Envision Athletic Centre, the weekend of February 23-25, 2012. The best two out of three series will be the historic first home playoff games in the six year affiliation with both Canada West and the CIS.

The women’s team finished 12-6, good for second place in the Pacific Division of Canada West and they will host the University of Calgary Dinos, 14-6, good for third place in the Prairie Division. The Cascades nationally ranked 10th, in the CIS top ten poll defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen two straight on the road last year and advanced to the inaugural CIS national regional tournament, losing to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, 78-69, in Fredericton, NB. The Cascades broke numerous school records this year and look to re write the post season history book over the next four weeks.

Canada West regular season “Firsts”

-2011-12 First Campaign Nationally Ranked in CIS Top Ten for six weeks

-November 1 CIS National Ranking of 9th in Canada highest in six years as member of CIS

-7-2 home record best Cascade mark in six Canada West regular seasons

-12-6 Canada West record best in six years in conference

-12 victories ties last year’s team for most by any Cascade team in Canada West

-Team’s winning percentage of 66% highest in six Canada West regular seasons

Canada West post season

-77-63 victory over Winnipeg, February 25th, first Cascade post season victory in Canada West – 2010-11 season

-Two game sweep over U Winnipeg first quarterfinal series win in Canada West – 2010-1 season

-2010-11 First appearance in Canada West “Final Four” –Forth Place finish in Saskatoon, SK

-Last year’s trip to CIS Regional play downs first Cascade game at CIS National level (Toronto 78-69)

The men’s team finished 13-5, good for second place in the Pacific Division of Canada West and they will host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 11-9, good for third place in the Prairie Division. The Cascades nationally ranked 5th, in the CIS top ten poll defeated the TWU Spartans, 81-80, in game one of the best two out of three quarterfinal last year to record their first ever post season win in Canada West. The Cascades also look to re write their post season record book this coming month.
