Joel Friesen and Tessa Klassen UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat Athletes of the Week

Klassen led the UFV Cascades women’s basketball team to a two game sweep of the 10th ranked University of Calgary Dinos, defeating Calgary on Thursday by a new playoff school record 20 point differential, 63-43 and 85-67 on Friday. The Cascades veteran guard was top scorer both nights with 13 and 21 points respective fully. Tessa hit 10 three point baskets including seven in the Friday victory. She also recorded 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 7 steals over the weekend, while playing 70 minutes.
The Cascades won a Canada West playoff series on their home court for the first time in their six years associated with the conference.
“Tessa was our leader on the court this weekend. I am very proud of her leadership against a very talented Calgary team,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.

Friesen led UFV Cascades men’s basketball team to a Canada West quarterfinal playoff victory two games to one over the University of Lethbridge with a buzzer beating three point basket in Saturday’s final game. It marks the first Canada West quarterfinal playoff series win in UFV’s six year association with the conference. The scores were Lethbridge, 87-78 on Thursday, UFV 74-66, on Friday and 69-68 on Saturday.
The third year Abbotsford native scored 33 points on the weekend while pulling down 13 rebounds and recording 8 assists, 5 steals while playing 89 minutes.
“We wanted the ball in Joel’s hands at the end of the game, but there is no way I can even pretend we drew that up, it was an unbelievable clutch moment, and we excited to be moving on to the final four,” said UFV head coach Barnaby Craddock.
