Big Showdown on Clearbrook Road, Volleyball teams face arch rival CBC

The University of the Fraser Valley men’s and women’s volleyball teams face their arch rivals the CBC Bearcats on Thursday and Friday to close out the 24 game PACWEST regular season schedule. The games are set for 6PM (women) and 7:45PM (men) at the Bearcats’ gym on Clearbrook Road.

The women’s volleyball team come into the final two regular season games with an 18-4 record and second place clinched with gives the Cascades a bye in the first round of the PACWEST playoffs February 23-25 at Douglass College in New Westminster, BC. UFV swept CBC in October at the Envision Athletic Centre winning both games 3-0, by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-13, in game one and 25-13, 25-20 and 25-14 in game two.

The Cascades have had an excellent year nationally ranked in the CCAA top ten poll the entire season, currently 4th in Canada at the college level. The Cascades have been the recipients of several awards as Kayla Bruce, Surrey, BC (week of October 30th) and Krista Hogewoning, Delta, BC (November 7th) were named PACWEST female volleyball athletes of the week. Bruce was also named the PACWEST female volleyball athlete of the month for December, 2011.

The Cascades are also in the PACWEST top ten in all numerous statistical categories, Brittany Stewart, Walnut Grove, BC is second in digs with 348, for a 4.30 average. Kierra Noot, Surrey, BC leads the PACWEST in blocks with 79 for a 1.13 average. Bruce leads in aces with 71 for a 0.85 average and Jenna Evans, Abbotsford, BC is fourth in kills with 237 for a 3.00 average. Bruce is the overall total offensive statistics leader with a 4.21 average.

The men’s volleyball team is in a fight for the sixth and final playoff position. The Cascasdes go into the final weekend of the regular season needing a victory against the CBC Bearcats to clinch a trip to Douglass College. The Cascades are 7-15 going into the final two games. The COTR Avalanche finished the PACWEST season with a 7-17 record but have at the moment a better sets record overall, the fifth potential tie breaker in the PACWEST rules and regulations. During the regular season both UFV and COTR split the four games by identical scores and both won 8 sets in the four matches.

The Cascades split with CBC in October, at the Envision Athletic Centre, falling 3-0 in the first match and winning a very exciting second match with a dramatic three set comeback, 3-2, on the second day.

The scores were 23-25, 20-25 and 14-25 on Friday and Saturday 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 26-24 and 15-12.

The Cascades are led by Alex Dumerton, Abbotsford, BC who is 9th in digs with 163 for a 2.01 average. Trevor Nickel, Abbotsford, BC is sixth in blocks with 60 for an 0.68 average, Aaron Flanagan, Langley, BC is ranked 8th in kills with 232 for a 2.90 average and also leads the Cascades in total offense with 3.23 average, good for 12th in the PACWEST.
