Remain undefeated at Envision Athletic Center with perfect 6-0 record in Abbotsford
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 64-56, to improve their Canada West regular season record to 7-3, good for a share of First Place in the West Division. The Cascades extend their unbeaten streak at the Envision Athletic Center to six straight this season and eight straight Canada West regular season games dating back to last February, 2011.
The Cascades withstood a strong start by the Pronghorns who scored early and quick to take the lead in the first quarter and hold onto to it by four points at the buzzer. The Cascades trademark defense came alive in the second quarter holding Lethbridge to seven second quarter points en route to regaining the lead and going into the locker room, at the half, up by nine points. While the second half was a defensive struggle by both teams, UFV maintained their lead throughout the half as they won their seventh Canada West regular season game by eight points. Again the Cascades defense played a strong game holding the Pronghorns to 29 points in the entire second half.
“Lethbridge came out hard tonight and we were fortunate to escape the game with a win. The game could have easily gone the other way, especially with their point guard on the bench in the final quarter. Sometimes you need to win ugly and fortunately we got it done tonight. With the 18 game schedule, every win is so important, we’ll take the win and start getting ready for a tough test in Victoria next week,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba led the Cascades with a game high 24 point performance. Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC and Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC each added 12 points in the victory. Sarah Wierks also pulled down 13 rebounds as UFV out rebounded Lethbridge by 17 boards, 44-27.
The Pronghorns were led by Lauren Taal, Lethbridge, Alberta with 19 points. Deanna Dotts, Hayden, Idaho added 11 points. Taal and Dotts each pulled down five rebounds for Lethbridge.
The Cascades travel to Victoria next weekend, to face the Vikes in two critical games for playoff positions in the West Division.
